Chess reimagined: moving places
Inspired by Tunde Onakoya’s Chess in Slums Africa project, we reimagined the game of chess in an amalgam of time-honored strategy and societal and architectural expression. From the island to the mainland of Lagos, it’s an exhibit of heritage. A familiar terrain Sporting earthy tones of kaolin and loam, with a wood-grain finish reminiscent of the contour lines on maps, each piece is modeled after notable landmarks in Lagos. From the imposing Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge to the resplendent Civic Tower, our favorite places are in the fray. Flair-some moves Cuing the social rite of alternate monikers, we made stylized spelling variants of the names of the chess pieces. The result: chess pieces with an anthropomorphic swagger. And what’s better than a good move? A flair-some one.
